Types of UPVC Door Handles

Lever/Lever

A lever is a rigid bar that is pivotally positioned around a point (known as a the fulcrum). When you apply force to the end of the bar, the fulcrum is likely to turn in the direction the force is applied. The distance between the fulcrum to the point where you apply the force determines how far the lever can move. This is called the mechanical advantage. The greater the length of the lever, the larger the advantage in terms of mechanical. Levers can also have a variety of effects based on how the forces are applied. A lever in class 2 for instance, has a tendency of turning in the opposite direction when an force of the effort is applied. If you push on the handle of a door the force will create the same rotational effects as this.

However, levers don't create energy. They multiply the force by changing small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into larger amounts of force applied over smaller distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and move massive quantities of cargo. This is also the principle behind the levers that are found in many everyday tools, such as crowbars, fishing rods, claws for hammers and even your own legs when you stand on the hand brakes of your car.

Lever/Pad

Lever pad handles, also referred to as upvc door handles have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. They are available in a variety of variations & finishes and are suitable for a range of materials including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for the outer and inner door, with screws and spindles included. They are available in both hand and unhandled versions to accommodate different types of window handles of users.

They are typically used for new constructions and can be installed to replace doors made of upvc. The levers are lifted to open the multipoint locks and the key is turned to close or unlock the door. They provide a bit more security than traditional lever door handles since locking is only done by the inside using keys.

They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt but are a cost-effective option to provide extra home security. The only downside is that they don't have the same level of security as a cylinder bolt and therefore won't prevent access from outside when the door is left open.

Typically, they are designed to work with a 92mm lock or the replacement version of this known as a Paddock lock. They will feature a 92mm cylinder center on the inside and 62mm on the exterior and be equipped with two spindle followers. Some come with a backplate in place, while others can be removed to accommodate different fixing centers.

Lever/Snib

Lever latches are the simplest type of door handles. Pressing down on the lever triggers a simple latch mechanism inside the door to keep it closed. It can also be locked using a key. Certain lever privacy handles operate similar to the doorknob, but with an additional snib, which is similar to a doorknob.

A snib can be extremely useful tool, particularly in homes where security and privacy are important. If your partner arrives at home late from work, you can use the snib to ensure they won't be able to enter until they're ready to move in. This type of handle can also be used for doors in the interior, like those in bedrooms where you wish to restrict outside access.

In some cases there are instances where snib buttons could cause issues, especially when you have older locks or doors that are warped. If the snib button is used accidentally, or by a person who isn't accustomed to it, the door can slam shut and lock you out. In most cases, you can gain entry by knocking on the door frame or the letterbox, but this isn't ideal.

Lever/Moveable Pad

This is a popular handle style for front doors. It comes with the advantage of stopping the door from opening from the outside without a key if the lock isn't deadlocked. This is accomplished through a 'pad' shaped external handle which locks in the gap between the handles and the lock case to prevent the latch from being removed or the door being opened.

This handle is designed to work with uPVC multipoint locks which use a split spindle mechanism. This type of operation requires the internal lever handle as well as the external pad handle to be installed on the same lock case. This could be a straightforward switch from the current uPVC handles, but it could also involve changing the lock case or a new set of handle furniture to allow for this additional function.

These aluminium lever/movable pads door handles are suitable to be used on uPVC and feature a maintenance-free slide bearing. They also include fixing lugs, spring cassettes and a non-stick slide bearing. These handles have a cut-out for a euro-profile, and can be mounted on various uPVC or timber doors.

Lever/Moveable Snib

The lever/lever handle is among the most well-known types of upvc door handles and comes in a range of designs. It is made up of two handles for doors that can be locked and moved by a thumbturn cylinder, or the use of a key. Pad handles are an alternative to a lever/lever handle and consists of a fixed or movable pad that can be used to operate the lock.
